In exactly one hour and two minutes, New York Yankees’ pitcher CC Sabathia will throw the first pitch of the 2011 Major League Baseball season to Detroit Tigers’ centerfielder Austin Jackson.

Is there a better place for the Major League Baseball season to start than at Yankee Stadium? Not likely.

Simultaneously, at Nationals Park, Washington starter Livan Hernandez will do the same with Braves’ LF Martin Prado. And the MLB season will be underway. That means hope. That means excitement. And, to me, that simply means summer is here! (more…)

NHL rules tinkering is absurd…and hurting the game

Florida Panthers’ GM Dale Tallon has told TSN that, at next week’s NHL general managers’ meetings, he intends to initiate a discussion about the possibility of the NHL adopting something called “a coach’s challenge.”

Sounds lovely but, you know what, I’ve had it. If I read about one more proposed NHL rule change, I’m gonna go off the deep end. I have never seen a professional league – one that has been around for almost a century – that tinkers and fiddles more with its rules. And their fumbling and bumbling continually cheapens a great product. (more…)

I cannot say, to even a small degree, that I saw this one coming. We all understand that if the Phillies win three straight and the Yankees two straight, the World Series will feature the two best teams in baseball. All will be right in the world. But if Texas and San Francisco can each win just one more game, we’re going to see a World Series match-up that we’ve never seen before. And we’ll have a World Series champion that has never won it all, or hasn’t won since 1954 (as the New York Giants). (more…)

All right, baseball fans, the NLCS and ALCS are poised to throw their first pitches as the path to the World Series continues.

And these two LCS series, more than any other in recent memory, feature pitching match-ups that are a dream for baseball purists. The Phillies may have the three best starters with which any team has ever entered the postseason. And the Yankees are not far behind. Pittsburgh Pirates’ third baseman Bill Mazeroski reached out and poked a Bill Terry pitch high over the leftfield wall at Forbes Field. Maz’ homer ended the World Series – the first time the Fall Classic had ended with a walk-off home run. And it’s only happened once since. Joe Carter fans may remember that one.
