There are six Canadian teams in the NHL, but only two will be worth watching this season – the Edmonton Oilers and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

You can throw a sack over the other four and, maybe, check on them next year. That doesn’t mean that the Oilers and Maple Leafs will light the world on fire, make the Stanley Cup Playoffs and still be playing in June. It means that, of Canada’s six, Edmonton and Toronto will be the most entertaining – on and off the ice. (more…)

Pat Burns is dead. That was announced at around 11:00 AM Friday. Pat Burns isn’t dead. That announcement came around noon.

Pat Burns

Former NHL head coach Pat Burns must have been shocked to learn that, according to TSN, he'd passed away

What the heck is going on? How did Pat Burns feel? Why was everyone so hell-bent on being the very first Canadian sports media outlet to announce Pat Burns’ demise? That’s easy. It’s because the narrow-thinking, myopic individuals who inhabit sports directors’ and executive producers’ offices across this nation think that the most important thing in sports television these days is to get it first – no matter what “it” is. And, until that ridiculous train of thought is broken, we’re going to have to endure more and more of exactly what happened Friday. (more…)

Gary Bettman

After a fifteen-year absence, Gary Bettman has made it clear that the NHL would like to be back in Québec City...but not without a new rink

Under no circumstances should public money be used to help build arenas or stadiums anywhere Canada. Whatever team or teams play in these facilities are/will almost certainly be privately owned. Every Canadian NHL team is privately owned. Just three CFL teams are owned by the community – the Edmonton Eskimos, Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Canadian Hockey League teams are almost exclusively privately owned. Private ownership must equal private funding for new facilities. Period. (more…)

Eric Tillman

Today, the Eskimos will officially announce that Eric Tillman will become their new general manager. As a CFL GM, he has won the Grey Cup three times with three different teams. And, on January 4, 2010, he also pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting his sixteen-year old babysitter. And that last little tidbit of information is completely irrelevant – and should be – as the Eskimos move into the future. (more…)

Hey, Twitter athletes, it’s time to don the old thinking cap. Just because you have a keyboard in front of you and maybe a social beverage at your right elbow, with no other people in the room, DOES NOT mean no one is there with you.

Chad Ochocinco

Bengals' wide received Chad Ochocinco thought it would be a good idea to tweet during an NFL game in which he was playing. Turns out this was not a good idea.

As soon as you hit “Send,” you have let thousands of other people right into your head. Right in. Most of those thousands are people you don’t know. Many of them do not like you. You are not tweeting your friends. You are Tweeting the world. It’s like you have a network television crew standing right beside you. Ready to take the tape of what you just Tweeted and put it on the six o’clock sports. If you wouldn’t say it to a TV crew, DO NOT TWEET IT! (more…)
